Kenya 'Mika' Roast Comparison

Here's how it all came about. First it was Mike and I going head to head, modded Rosto air roaster vs. grill based drum roaster using the Kenya Mika beans. Then Simpson chimed in with a desire to compare his propane air roasts with others, so we let him in. Jim and I had been on another thread discussing air vs. drum and talked about him cloning a drum roast in his modded FR to see how closely he could match the drum roast profile, so he entered the fray also. So all in all, it was an overall roaster/taste comparison, with a side comparison of Jim's clone and my drum roast(which I thought was incredibly similar, except for a difference in roast degree -Jim's was a bit darker- and the expected differences there).

Mike had to postpone his cupping, but he vac sealed the beans, and evidently they were preserved adequately. Most of us have had a bit of trouble getting the data into digested form (me included), but now all have reported in and the data is up. Whew.

Here's my results and observations of each roast

Cupper-- Ed Needham

All samples roasted 7/6, and shipped 'USPS Priority Mail' on 7/7.

Received all six samples in good condition on 7/10.

Mike McGinniss roasted using a modified Rosto air roaster

Ted Simpson roasted in his home-built propane-fired air roaster

Jim Schulman roasted in his modified Fresh Roast air roaster

Ed Needham used a home-built five pound grill-based rotisserie drum roaster

Blind cupped each on 7/10 using standard 'bowl-type' cupping method.

Jim's Modified Clone roast had a sweet, maple syrup aroma, thick, full bodied flavor, and a hint of a citrusy aftertaste.

Ted's #2 roast had a harsh, short lived aroma, a harshness to the flavor that overshadowed some pleasant fruity notes, and a lingering, citrusy and salty aftertaste.
